Root Canal Treatments
A tooth has small canals inside the roots. These canals contain nerves. Sometimes the nerves can get infected by bacteria that live in the mouth. This may be caused by decay, a leaky filling or trauma to the tooth. The infection can lead to pain and discomfort. A root canal procedure is used to treat this infection to save the tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted.

What Is a
Root Canal
Treatment?
A Root Canal Treatment is used in cases where a tooth is suffering from decay or infection. During a Root Canal Treatment, the nerve and pulp are extracted, removing all bacteria and infection. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned and sealed to prevent further infections. Root Canal Treatments are a preventative procedure which help to avoid the onset of toxic abscesses surrounding the infected tooth or teeth.

What to expect during your initial consultation
At our practice we accept self-referrals and referrals from other local practices. All patients will need an initial consultation with our Root Canal Specialist with the exception of some in-house referrals.
The consultation lasts for 30 minutes. Our Specialist will do a limited examination and take new X-rays of the tooth in question to determine its suitability for treatment.
Our Specialist will discuss whether this treatment is viable and all other options available. The treatment procedure will also be explained during this visit.
What to expect during your treatment visit
In most cases the treatment takes place over two visits consisting of up to 90 minutes each. You will have local anaesthetic and should thus not feel any discomfort. A rubber sheet is used to isolate the tooth being treated. This prevents the bacteria from re-entering the disinfected canals.
After the root canal treatment has been completed, you will need to book an appointment with your General Dentist. This is to place a permanent filling or a crown on the treated tooth.
If you think you need a root canal treatment, please contact us for more information or speak to your General Dentist to be referred.
